about
Every guitar player I've known has a riff similar to Arthur Smith's "Guitar Boogie". Mine's not as complex as the original, but has the same feel. Designed to make you Dance!
One day, I came up with the chorus line:
"runnin' on caffeine and cigarettes, in a zig zag pattern in trains and jets, give Saint Peter my regrets, I gotta keep runnin 'til God Forgets"
Well, like many good lines, it lay fallow for some time until I realized it would fit the riff. Viola! a new song!
The verses are a bit crafty. On first listen, one might think the scoundrel pulled some stunt of infidelity, but no! His "Big Mistake" was simply telling her he loved her and then was too scared by the reciprocal love to hang around. Someone I know almost did that to me. But I caught her just in time.
I might be flying from New York to California
I might be rolling from Chicago down to New Orleans
I might be driving from Miami to Seattle
Dodging every battle ground in between
Swear to God I never meant to hurt nobody
certainly not one as sweet as she
but I made that big mistake
That causes hearts to break
And when God finds out, He's gonna punish me
chorus
So I'm runnin' on caffeine and cigarettes
A zig zag pattern in trains and jets
give Saint Peter my regrets
Cause I gotta keep runnin 'til God Forgets
Yes I'm runnin on caffeine and cigarettes
Fast cars, slow trains, and crowded jets
I'm damned surprised it ain't killed me yet
But I gotta keep runnin 'til God Forgets
bridge
Gotta keep on runnin, 'Til God forgets
Day and night I'm suffering from cold sweats
Even friendly greetings start to sound like threats
But I'm gonna keep on runnin 'til God Forgets
'til God forgets what I've done to His angel
The one he sent down just for me
broken hearts sure can be so painful
Now no one even wants to pray for me
I wasn't thinking when I told her that I loved her
there was any chance at all she'd fall for me
But when she said she loved me too
Man, What was I to do?
If I'd stayed I'd break her heart worse, that's the fool I'm known to be
chorus
So I'm runnin on caffeine and cigarettes
A zig zag pattern in trains and jets
give Saint Peter my regrets
I gotta keep runnin 'til God Forgets
I'm runnin on caffeine and cigarettes
Fast cars, slow trains, and crowded jets
and I'm damned surprised it ain't killed me yet
I gotta keep runnin 'til God Forgets
bridge
Gotta keep on runnin, 'Til God forgets
His sword of retribution hasn't cut me yet
Tell that ol' grim reaper he better take no bets
Cause I'm gonna keep on runnin 'til God Forgets
Yes I'm gonna keep on runnin 'til God Forgets
