about

This song was written and recorded a couple years ago for my friend Joseph Roy Sheppherd. His historical novel Podivúžina, about the one-street Slovak village of Podivúžina, tells the story of the origin of an ancient Eastern European creature called the Vodník, the "water-dweller." Kind of a scary critter! I chose to write it from the Vodnik's perspective. The recording is very simple, and a bit rough. But listen as though you were hearing some traveling bard singing in a tavern long long ago.

"The Vodník" - Lyrics and Music by Darrell Elmer Rodgers

lyrics

I am the Vodník, I live ‘neath the waves
I lure your children to watery graves
With my honeyed tongue and my candied lies
wearing my green tailcoat disguise
Chorus:
But the people say: “Not any more!”
Yes the people say: “Not any more!”
The Angler has snared the Vodník for sure!
So the people say: “Not any more!”
But what of wet footprints found near the door?
What of the wet foot prints found near the door?
The Vodník can change to any shape
with legs or wings he'll make his escape
Or perhaps he’ll wait with his soulless eyes
the only trait you’ll recognize
Chorus:
But the people say: “Not any more!”
Yes the people say: “Not any more!”
The Angler has snared the Vodník for sure!
So the people say: “Not any more!”
But what of wet foot prints found near the door?
What of the wet foot prints found near the door?
I am the Vodník from under the lake
At midnight or noon a soul I will take
My tailcoat may hang from a nail on the wall
But I'll wear it again! And more tears will fall
Chorus:
But the people say: “Not any more!”
Yes the people say: “Not any more!”
The Angler has snared the Vodník for sure!
So the people say: “Not any more!”
But what of wet foot prints found near the door?
What of the wet foot prints found near the door?
Beware the wet foot prints outside the door!
